Boots Before Outfits — The Investment Rule I've Never Broken
Let me tell you about the pair of boots that changed everything.
They came from my first love's mother. Vintage. Handmade in Italy. 1980s brown leather so soft you simply slipped your foot in — no zip, no buckle, no effort. Just pure Italian craftsmanship from a decade that clearly understood what mattered.
I was young. I was broke. And I was wearing the most extraordinary boots in the room.
That was it for me. The rule was set and it has never been broken since.
Boots first. Always.
I currently own nine pairs. I love them all equally and I refuse to apologise for any of them.
The equation that only works one way
Here's the truth nobody tells you about footwear — cheap shoes will cheapen even the most expensive outfit. It doesn't matter how beautiful the clothing is. Look down and everything falls apart.
But quality boots? They lift an outfit dramatically. Dramatically. A simple black tee, good pants and an extraordinary pair of Italian leather boots is not a basic outfit. It's a considered, intentional, quietly powerful one.
I would never put cheap shoes on my feet. Not because I'm precious about it — but because I've learned that footwear is where the entire look lives or dies. Everything else is just context.
A beautiful pair of boots will carry a mediocre outfit into something memorable. The equation only works one way.
What quality boots actually means
Not expensive for the sake of expensive. Not a recognisable logo. For me quality means one thing — Italian or Spanish leather, full stop.
There is a reason these two countries have dominated footwear for centuries. It's not marketing. It's craft that's been passed down through generations and shows up in every stitch, every sole, every last.
Leather that softens and moulds to your foot over time rather than staying rigid and uncomfortable. A sole that's resoleable — because a great boot should last decades, not seasons. And a style so considered and universal that it simply doesn't date. No trend chasing. No seasonal gimmicks. Just a boot that looks as relevant in ten years as it does today.
I once spent $450 on a pair of Italian biker boots. I have never once questioned that decision. Not for a single second. Cost per wear at this point is essentially zero. 😄
The maths that actually makes sense
A $50 boot worn twice before falling apart costs more per wear than a $500 boot worn across fifteen years. I am not great at maths generally but this particular equation I have always understood perfectly.
What I do instead of buying new outfits
Shop my existing wardrobe first. Almost always there's an outfit already there that I've forgotten about or haven't combined in the right way. A good tee, good pants, extraordinary boots — that's not a basic outfit. That's a considered one.
The budget that would have gone on something new goes toward the next pair of boots instead. Currently eyeing something Italian. Obviously.

Nine pairs and counting
Let me introduce you to the collection — because every pair deserves a moment.
The black Italian biker boots that started the modern chapter. The brown suede wedge ankle in Spanish leather that goes with everything and knows it. The gold soft Italian boots I found in London twenty years ago that I will be buried in — some purchases are simply forever.
The black pointy ankle boots that are so rock star I feel like a different person when I put them on. Three pairs of black ankle combat boots — all slightly different, all completely necessary, I don't make the rules.
The chocolate brown heeled Spanish pair I've had for ten years that still look like I bought them yesterday. The super high black suede that only comes out for special occasions but absolutely earns its wardrobe space when it does.
And my latest obsession — dark green super shiny Cuban heeled Italian boots acquired at less than half price. A bargain so good it felt slightly illegal. 😄
Each pair chosen deliberately. Each pair loved completely. Each pair a better investment than anything hanging in my wardrobe.
Buy the boots. Wear them everywhere. Thank me later. 👢
